Life for Ayatu Nure has not turned out as he expected. Once a wealthy landowner, he followed the age-old tradition of his people, and took more than one wife. In fact, he took many wives! This story takes us to Ethiopia to see the family they created, and how rising costs are hindering Ethiopians' ability to maintain many wives and scores of children.

Palm oil production has risen sharply in Peru over the past decades. For many farmers in the region, growing palm is an important alternative to the often illegal cultivation of coca. A UN programme is helping them make the switch to sustainable crops.

Timor-Leste, a small island nation in Asia, has struggled with political and economic instability since its 2002 independence. The 2007 elections helped consolidate its democracy, and today the country has a significant number of women holding important government seats. A UN-backed initiative is helping to foster gender equality on all levels of Timorese society.

UN troops play an important peacekeeping role in the unstable Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. A Brazilian NGO is also promoting peace by teaching the martial art of "Capoeira" to youngsters in a tough neighbourhood of the city.

The Philippines has exported tens of thousands of nurses over the past few years, a trend that is likely to continue due to high demand in developed countries. This has created a shortage of nurses in the Philippines, and has left unprotected migrants subject to exploitation. New bilateral agreements seek to improve migrants' protection while encouraging the return of experienced professionals.
